A Moorish American Sufi Lesson:
The Three Leaders and the Path to Righteous Leadership

In this lesson, we reflect on the journey of three young men who were placed under reproof by the Supreme Grand Sheik. Through their experiences, we learn valuable lessons about leadership, integrity, and the protection of our spiritual and communal values.

Introduction: The Importance of Reproof in Spiritual Growth

As Moorish Americans, we understand that leadership is not only a responsibility but also a reflection of one's character and understanding of divine principles. In this journey, reproof (correction or discipline) plays a vital role. How we respond to correction determines our future path, both as leaders and as individuals in the service of Allah. Let us consider the story of three young men who faced correction and how their reactions shaped their destinies as leaders within the Moorish Science Temple of America.

The Three Leaders
The Leader of Indifference

The first young man, when chastised by the Supreme Grand Sheik, dismissed the reproof. He regarded it as insignificant and allowed his pride to shield him from the lessons it offered. As time passed, he rose to leadership, but his failure to value correction led him to neglect the rules and regulations meant to protect the Temple and its members. This leader became one who did not safeguard the teachings or uphold the discipline of the community, leaving it vulnerable to disorder.

Lesson: When we treat correction lightly, we become indifferent to the principles we are meant to uphold. This indifference undermines the integrity of our leadership, leaving us unable to protect what is sacred. In the Moorish tradition, rules and regulations are not burdens, but divine guides that ensure the community’s well-being.

Reflection: Have you ever dismissed correction, and what was the result? How can we better embrace reproof to strengthen our leadership?

The Leader of Hurt

The second young man took the chastisement personally. His feelings were hurt, and instead of seeing the wisdom in the correction, he allowed his emotional reaction to cloud his judgment. When he later became a leader, this emotional vulnerability translated into weak rules and regulations. His leadership lacked the firmness required to uphold the standards of the Temple, leading to compromises that weakened the spiritual foundation of the community.

Lesson: While emotions are natural, they must be tempered with wisdom. When we let hurt feelings dominate, we lose sight of the greater mission—upholding the Prophet's legacy. A leader must strike a balance between compassion and firmness, ensuring that emotions do not weaken the laws that protect the faith.

Reflection: How do you manage your emotions when corrected or criticized? What can we do to build resilience in the face of reproof?

The Leader of Integrity

The third young man, however, took the chastisement to heart as a lesson. He did not see it as a personal attack but as a divine opportunity for growth. He reflected on his actions, corrected his behavior, and emerged with a deeper understanding of his role in preserving the integrity of the Temple and the legacy of the Prophet. When he became a leader, he upheld the rules and regulations with firmness and wisdom, ensuring the spiritual health of the community and protecting its values for future generations.

Lesson: True leadership is shaped by the ability to accept correction, learn from it, and commit to doing better. This path of humility and self-reflection allows a leader to maintain the integrity of the Moorish Science Temple, ensuring the preservation of divine principles and the legacy of the Prophet.

Reflection: How can you use correction as a tool for growth? In what ways can you protect the spiritual and moral integrity of your community?

Conclusion: Embracing Reproof as a Moorish Sufi Leader

In Moorish American Sufi teachings, the path to leadership is one of humility, self-reflection, and unwavering dedication to divine principles. The way we respond to reproof reflects our understanding of Allah’s guidance and our commitment to the community. Like the third young man, we are called to see correction as a blessing, an opportunity to improve, and a way to ensure that we lead with integrity.

Let us strive to be leaders who accept correction with grace, protect the rules and regulations of the Temple, and preserve the sacred legacy of the Prophet for future generations.

Exercise:

  • Reflect on a time when you were corrected or chastised. How did you respond?
    What did you learn?

  • In your current role, how can you strengthen your leadership by embracing humility and integrity?

Closing Prayer: "O Allah, grant us the wisdom to accept reproof with humility, the strength to learn from our mistakes, and the integrity to lead with righteousness. May we protect the sacred legacy of our Prophet and uphold the divine principles of the Moorish Science Temple in every word, act, and deed. Peace & Love Bismillah."
